_HISTORY:
Wiki History

Like most heroes and would-be heroes, Ivan attended the Hero Academy as a student to groom and hone his NEXT abilities. While the environment was ripe to encourage his skills, Ivan lacked extreme confidence in himself and his own abilities; choosing instead to stick behind whom he deemed his betters and watch from the sidelines.

However, this penchant to stay as a wallflower with his nose kept dry was, in a sad turn of events, was what lead him to graduating to Hero status. During his schooldays he always acted as the shadow to a much more capable student, Edward, who was renowned and the top of his class. Despite his excellent record, Edward's overconfidence lead him to attempt to thwart a crime in progress while begging Ivan to help him. Ivan's timorous and unsure nature lead him to getting cold feet in not only the face of danger, but the prospect that he would be breaking university rules by using his power outside school grounds.

With Edward left to the hostage situation, the young man ended up accidentally killing the victim, and thus destroying his own chance of ever becoming a certified hero. Edward was to spend the rest of his days in jail, while Ivan went on to fulfill the role he believed had been better suited for a man like Edward, not a coward like himself.

Consequently, throughout the series, Ivan's cowardice prevents him from truly acting as a Hero, with him always ending up in the background and as Origami Cyclone he's infamous for "photobombing" the other Heroes' events and always giving into his Sponsors' demands to showcase his logos rather than performing acts of heroism. Sadly this means he's considered somewhat of a "joke hero" and he almost consistently falls into the lowest ranking. We see this later on as well when people begin losing faith in the Heroes due to the appearance of Lunatic, Ivan describes that the followers on his blog had been bashing him and were saying that he wasn't cut out to be a Hero, which seemed to upset him deeply.

It's not until later in the series, after he encounters Edward again, once he broke out of prison to get revenge on Ivan, that he comes to realize his mistakes and override his guilt enough to gain a little confidence in himself. Edward, thinking that Ivan had purposefully abandoned him, wanted to kill him. However, Edward first re-appears when Origami returned as an alumni of the Hero Academy to give their students tips on how to be a hero, Edward tries to kill him and Origami doesn't fight back. He tells Kotetsu that he deserves this, and that they should just let him die, proving that he suffers from a lack of self-worth and that he has severe guilt over what happened during the incident with Edward. He even says that he feels his NEXT powers are useless, even though Kotetsu says that there's bound to be something only he can do with them. In fact, when Kotetsu asked him about it, he continually says that Kotetsu was wrong about Origami being the more capable hero, and that Edward was the one who should have been the hero all along instead.

When Lunatic arrives on the scene to try and kill Edward because he broke out of prison without serving his full term, Origami throws himself in front of Edward and screams: "I'm going to protect Edward! I'm going to protect him!" This actually shocks Edward, but even when Origami uses his NEXT ability to turn into Edward in order to fool Lunatic, Lunatic was able to discern that he was Origami Cyclone because when asked if he would pay for his sins, he said "yes" without hesitation. Given that a sinner would never take responsibility for their crimes, Lunatic thus figures out that he's Origami. He would literally die for Edward if that would make him happy or feel better in any way, or so he says to Kotetsu, but Barnaby points out that Edward was just looking for someone to blame.

In any case, even when Lunatic finds out that he's Origami and he's about to kill Edward, Ivan rushes in front of his former schoolmate, and shields him. Lunatic says that those who protect evil are evil themselves and when he's about to kill Origami for protecting Edward, Kotetsu and Barnaby come to their rescue.

While Edward goes back to prison, he at least realizes that Origami hadn't been trying to one-up him, but wanted Edward to do the right thing. Even as Edward was being taken back in an armored truck, Ivan says "I hope we can make up for both of our failures", implying that he would like them to be friends again someday. Edward at least thanks him for saving him before leaving.

This is what inspires Origami Cyclone to no longer solely remain in the background, and he gains enough confidence to start acting as a Hero, and while he doesn't take the bigger steps right away but starts out small, he at least starts saving hostages. Given this incident, during the next arc we actually see Origami Cyclone starting to progress a little bit at a time. That "something" that only he could do with his powers comes to fruition when, during the point where Jake Martinez overtook Sternbild City, he infiltrates their ranking by shapeshifting into their henchman Hans Chuckman in order to find out how to shut down the Exo-suits controlled by Kriem through the Mad Bears. While this ultimately ends up failing and thus endangering his life because Jake was able to read his mind and find out right away he wasn't Hans Chuckman, he still manages to find out enough information that he indirectly saves the City by telling the Major and Maverick (the CEO of Hero TV) how Kriem was controlling the Exo-suits.

Like the other Heroes, he still takes on more of a background role down the road, as when Dr. Rotwang and Maverick take all of them hostage in separate rooms with a bomb around his neck.

_ABILITIES:
Ivan has the power to shapeshift into whoever he touches down to the molecular level, taking on their full appearance and voice, though is incapable of taking on their powers if the person he is touching has preternatural powers of their own. His shapeshifting abilities aren't limited to people, he can also transform into objects and animals, making him perfect for situations for which camouflage is needed.

While this is Ivan's most outstanding power, he's not totally adverse to combat. He's shown to have excellent marksmanship with his throwing stars, and has quite a steep knowledge in the use of the katana. His calling, physical-wise however, is his speed. Taking his namesake from the art of Togakure-ryū, a school of Ninjutsu, he can run and leap fast enough that in the flash of a camera he's notorious for photobombing and disappearing before the photographed victims even notice (that is until the photo is processed, of course).

_PERSONALITY:

Insecurities and Self-Depreciation

Stemming largely even from his school days, Ivan always willingly shadowed behind his friend Edward, who was able to give him advice and keep him from being completely withdrawn. He largely idolized and admired him. However, he is largely seen to have little self-worth, and this is because Ivan really has no confidence in himself or his NEXT powers. He almost seems as though he wishes he were someone else, with better abilities. He is well aware of his general unpopularity, but even belittles himself, saying in episode 8 to Kotetsu when they're at the Hero Academy in direct commentary to the fact that he feels he's unfit to teach other students given his continual lower ranking, "I mean, all I ever do is stay in the background", which is the mark of someone who is aware that they're unpopular and generally disliked. Of course if he had more confidence in himself, he could easily overrule that perception he has of himself, but he allows it to happen almost like he's punishing himself. The truth of the matter is, he thinks he's a phony. While in costume he comes across as energetic and self-confident as Origami Cyclone, in reality he is very unsure of himself and is a very quiet person. The disparaging difference lies in simply how little he believes in himself. He does these things to please his sponsors but under the mask, his words and lack of action mean that he has a generally very negative viewpoint of himself. But, as it turns out, this is in large part due to his past where his cowardice made him unable to intervene on his best friend Edward's behalf when the man asked for his help. Throughout the episode he continually comments on how he's unfit to be a Hero, that Edward should have been the hero instead.

Sycophantic to his Sponsors and Others

He also tends to force himself on others' behalf and ends up photobombing for the behalf of his Sponsors, hoping to make them happy. In a way, because he has no concept of self-worth, he ends up going to extreme lengths to please others to the point where he becomes obsequious, and will obey commands without question. He's also soft-spoken and very apologetic, such as when Kotetsu told him to stop crying when he was shapeshifted as Kotetsu, which made him in turn apologize profusely. He'd rather avoid upsetting anyone if he can, mainly because he doesn't want to stand out, and it also stems in part from his insecurities of not wanting to be in the spotlight. It's a trait that is so prevalent that it is even to such a fault that when he's found out as Origami Cyclone to Jake Martinez, he ends up doing what Jake tells him to and inadvertently fools Kotetsu when he transforms into Jake.

Ultimately, he doesn't handle excessive attention to himself well, and we see this too whenever he talks; he talks in a low whisper, which means others don't notice or hear him. Whenever he starts talking in fact, he doesn't even face towards the people he's talking to. Thus he's usually ignored, which is what he's more accustomed to, but sadly ends up perpetuating his own negative ideas about himself.

This can manifest itself positively however, when it comes to people he cares about. When Edward came back to the Hero Academy, despite Edward trying to kill him, he still threw himself in front of Edward to protect him from Lunatic. This goes to show that he will be extremely loyal to a fault, if someone he loves or cares about is in danger. So while he has potential to be a hero in this sense, it's because he holds himself back that he only shows this side of himself in an extreme situation. And yet, Ivan is willing to forgive and forget and not hold grudges, and this is what leads to him being able to make some progress in the end towards becoming a better Hero.

Obsessions and Being Impressionable

Ivan is seen to be quite impressionable, either by latching onto either a person or an interest with voracity and becomes quite immersed in whatever he sets his sights on. He admits to having quite a few obsessions, and goes through phases, which is somewhat typical of someone his age.

Ivan however, takes it to the next level; for example, his obsession with Japanese culture consumes his entire daily life. Even his transportation vehicle looks like a Japanese-style pagoda, and his entire Hero get-up is based off of Ninjutsu and Kabuki. In his speech patterns, he uses a lot of archaic Japanese such as "de gozaru" and the onomatopoeia for throwing his shuriken or ninja stars, "shu shu". He also uses stances that are common in Japanese theater and in sumo wrestling, even wearing geta and employing the usage of katana, or Japanese swords.

He ends up finding a new obsession all the time, but anything having to do with Japan is his main obsession. (He goes through a phase where he was into getting into throwing darts, and then he started getting into all kinds of miso soup, and then all kinds of green tea, etc)

The Powers of Observation

Despite being insecure and continually doubting himself even after he gains some confidence in being able to not just be in the background, we see that Ivan, out of all the Heroes, much like his ninja-loving self, is the one who always stays in the background, but by doing is so is able to learn the most about others around him. He often crouches down and whispers, facing away from the main group as mentioned before in how he speaks to others, and while it may seem as though he's keeping to himself he's actually listening quite intently to what others have to say. Much like the wallflower that he is, he's thus able to gather information more easily than others might. In fact, we might say that others can recognize that if he wanted to, he could easily be a very good spy. (Jake Martinez makes a comment about this as well.)
